Cubs quietly, significantly bolstering pitching depth

Another day, another flurry of Cubs pitching acquisitions.

With the reported agreement with free agent reliever Robert Gsellman, the Cubs have signed five pitchers to big-league deals since Monday, in addition to recently adding two non-roster invitees who are familiar names.

ESPN's Jesse Rogers reported Thursday the Cubs have agreed to one-year, big-league deals with Gsellman and Daniel Norris.

The Cubs signed Chris Martin, Steven Brault and David Robertson to one-year deals earlier this week.

Norris, 28, holds a 4.65 ERA in eight big-league seasons, making 167 appearances (83 starts). The lefty spent 2021 with the Tigers and Brewers (6.16 ERA in 56 relief appearances).

Gsellman, 28, spent last season with the Mets (3.77 ERA in 17 appearances/one start). In six seasons, he's made 176 appearances (34 starts), posting a 4.59 ERA.

He's already at Cubs camp.

Pitching numbers figure to be more important than bats this season with the quick ramp-up to Opening Day following MLB's lockout and concern over potential injuries.

Cubs president Jed Hoyer said this week his biggest focus is on adding pitching depth.

The flurry of moves has even left the manager constantly checking for the the newest faces and who he has on his team.

"Somebody walks by my office and they’re on their way to a physical and I’m meeting them for the first time," David Ross said on the TV broadcast during Thursday's game against the White Sox.

"The front office is working its butt off."

The Cubs have also brought back Jesse Chavez and Adrian Sampson this week as non-roster invitees.
