David Bote's MRI reveals some good news

The Cubs got a bit of good news Sunday on infielder David Bote, after an MRI revealed his left shoulder injury is less damaging than originally thought, David Ross said.

“We got the best news we can possibly get on him,” Ross added after the Cubs’ 5-1 loss to the Reds.

Bote hit the injured list Sunday after dislocating his shoulder sliding to break up a double play during Saturday’s win over the Reds. He was helped off the field by Ross and a trainer.

The Cubs medical staff popped his shoulder back into place after he exited Saturday’s game, and an MRI Sunday revealed stretched out ligaments and tendons, but no fractures, according to Ross.

“If there is such good news, it looks like it is on the better side of the news,” the Cubs manager added.

The Cubs have lost a plethora of players to injuries recently, with seven players currently on the 10-day IL. Anthony Rizzo is active but hasn’t played the past five games due to low back tightness.

“It was tough to see Bote go down,” starter Jake Arrieta said. “We've consistently shown the ability to pick up the slack with guys being called up and in filling in in big situations.

“We've shown the ability to do that this past month or so ago, and hopefully we can keep that going.”
