The Cubs expect to play three exhibition games before next month’s Opening Day, general manager Jed Hoyer told reporters Monday.

Per a Monday announcement from MLB, three is the maximum number of exhibition games teams are allowed to play.

“We’re working on it,” Hoyer said. “We don’t have anything to announce yet but hopefully we can announce something soon after the schedule gets announced.”

Considering MLB realigned its divisions for 2020 to limit travel amid the coronavirus, the White Sox are a likely opponent for any preseason games due to their proximity. A few exhibitions could also benefit both teams — they’ll be Central division foes in 2020 in the mega 10-team alignment.

MLB is expected to release the 2020 schedule in about a week, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. The league is waiting for all players to report to camp and take COVID-19 tests, while also checking in with local governments on the status of playing in home cities amid the pandemic.

Numerous states home to MLB teams — including California, Florida, Texas and Arizona — have seen recent surges in their positive coronavirus tests.
