As the Cubs continue addressing their roster after MLB's lockout, a new name has emerged as a potential fit.
NBC Sports Chicago's David Kaplan reported Wednesday the Cubs are exploring a pursuit of free agent and former Cy Young award winner Zack Greinke.
Greinke, an 18-year veteran, has a decorated résumé that includes six All-Star appearances and six Gold Glove awards. The two-time ERA champion won the AL Cy Young award in 2009 with the Royals and has finished top-10 in voting four other seasons
The 38-year-old, who's also pitched for the Brewers, Angels, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Astros, spent the last three seasons in Houston, posting a 3.89 ERA in 52 games (51 starts).
Last season he made 29 starts (30 appearances) and finished with a 4.16 ERA.
Cubs president Jed Hoyer said this week the club's biggest focus is on adding more pitching and pitching depth before Opening Day. They've so far landed Jesse Chavez, Chris Martin and Steven Brault.

Rotation depth is a concern, certainly with Adbert Alzolay expected to miss a chunk of the season with a lat injury.

If the Cubs land Greinke and he keeps a spot on the roster, an added benefit would be his influence on the young pitchers on the staff and those coming up to the big leagues this season.
