Cubs injuries: Pederson back tightness ‘much better'

Cubs left fielder Joc Pederson was out of the lineup Sunday at San Francisco, but he’s feeling “much better” after leaving Saturday’s game with back tightness, according to Cubs manager David Ross.

“Talking to him this morning, that was smart to come out and make sure everything was alright,” Ross said.

Pederson got treatment late in the Cubs' 4-3 loss to the Giants after exiting, Ross said, with promising results. Pederson tweaked his back running into the outfield wall, chasing down a home run in the third inning.

"Hopefully things will continue to move in the right direction, but I think he's going to be okay,” Ross said.

The Cubs could return another outfielder soon. Jake Marisnick’s running drills Saturday went “really well,” Ross said. Marisnick (hamstring), who has been on the 10-day IL for four weeks, is scheduled for light work Sunday. If that goes well, the Cubs could activate him for their series opener at San Diego on Monday.

“It should be soon,” Ross said.

Justin Steele bullpen

Cubs left-handed reliever Justin Steele (right hamstring strain) threw a 35-pitch bullpen on Sunday, according to Ross.

“It went okay,” Ross said. “We have to get the data back from the Rapsodo (pitch tracker), but we'll see how he presents tomorrow.”

The immediate feedback wasn’t as encouraging as Steele’s last time throwing.
