Cubs injury update: Bryant, Souza report to South Bend

Kris Bryant and Steven Souza Jr. reported to South Bend on Friday, as they work back from the injuries that landed them on the 10-day injured list last week.

They each took five at-bats at the alternate site Friday, Cubs manager David Ross announced.

“Everything seemed to be trending in the right direction,” Ross said.

He added that there is no timetable for either of their returns.

Bryant is on the injured list for a sprained left ring finger, but he also had a left wrist injection last week. Bryant injured both diving for a fly ball at Cleveland two weeks ago. He played through the pain for four more games. The Cubs placed him on the IL retroactive to Aug. 19.

Souza went on the IL with a right hamstring strain, retroactive to Aug. 17. Both are eligible to be activated as early as this weekend.

While their timelines remain uncertain, Ross did provide clarity on a separate lineup decision.

Right-handed pitcher Alec Mills is scheduled to start the second game of Saturday’s double header at Cincinnati, after Yu Darvish’s start in the first. The Cubs have yet to name a starting pitcher for Sunday.
