Cubs right fielder Jason Heyward has been named the team's nominee for the 2020 Roberto Clemente Award.

The Roberto Clemente Award is annually awarded to a player who "best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field," according to MLB.

Heyward has been active in helping the Chicago community amid COVID-19. Shortly after baseball shut down in March, he donated $100,000 to each of MASK — Mothers Against Senseless Killings — and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

In June, Heyward donated $100,000 through his family foundation to the University of Chicago. Half of that donation supported frontline workers and the personal burdens they face, such as childcare. The other half supported UChicago's contact tracing efforts on Chicago's South Side.

Recently, Heyward joined players across baseball in donating his game-day salary to the Players Alliance to combat racial inequality.

All 30 nominees will be recognized next Wednesday, the 19th annual Roberto Clemente Day. The award's recipient will be chosen by a panel including commissioner Rob Manfred, members of MLB-affiliated networks Fox Sports, TBS, ESPN and MLB Network, and Clemente's children, Enrique, Luis and Roberto Clemente, Jr.

Fans can vote here; the winner of the fan vote will count for a single vote from the panel.
