The Cubs selected right-handed pitcher Gray Fenter from the Orioles Triple-A roster with the 14th pick of the virtual Rule 5 Draft Thursday.

The Orioles originally drafted Fenter in the seventh round of the 2015 MLB Draft, out of West Memphis High School in Arkansas. He worked his way up from rookie ball to the Single-A South Atlantic League, where he pitched in 2019. That year, the last season he played, Fenter went 8-2 and recorded a 1.81 ERA in 22 games. Of those, he started 17 and finished three.

The Rule 5 Draft allows teams to select a specific set of players not included on a 40-man roster. Eligible players include those who first signed at 18 or younger and have not been added to a 40-man roster within five seasons, and players who signed at 19 or older and have not been protected within four seasons. Clubs that make a pick pay $100,000 to the team they took the player from.

The Cubs passed on all later MLB rounds.

In the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft, the Cubs selected right-handed pitcher Nicholas Padilla from the Rays’ Single-A roster and right-hander Samuel Reyes from the Pirates Single-A roster. The Cubs farm system also lost pitcher Yunior Perez to the Tigers and right-hander Jeffrey Passantino to the Pirates.
