Cubs make first round of spring training camp cuts

The Cubs made their first round of spring training cuts on Friday, assigning 22 players to minor league camp.

Right-handed pitchers Cory Abbott, Tyson Miller and Kohl Stewart have been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Right-hander Manny Rodríguez, catcher Miguel Amaya and infielder Christopher Morel have been optioned to Double-A Tennessee.

The Cubs assigned another 16 players to minor league camp:

-Right-handed pitchers James Bourque, Juan Gámez, Jake Jewell, Tommy Nance, Michael Rucker and Robert Stock

-Left-handed pitchers Brendon Little and Jerry Vasto

-Catchers Taylor Gushue and Tyler Payne

-Infielders Abiatal Avelino, Alfonso Rivas, Chase Strumpf, Andy Weber and Patrick Wisdom

-Outfielder Brennen Davis

Minor league spring training will not begin until the end of the month, and the season is not scheduled to begin until May. The 2020 alternate site format will resume to start the season.

With the moves, the Cubs' spring training roster stands at 51 players (28 pitchers). They have a few weeks to trim the group down to 26 players ahead of Opening Day.
