Cubs associate pitching, catching and strategy coach Mike Borzello has received a one-game suspension and undisclosed fine following multiple player and coach ejections in the Cubs’ 6-5 loss at Cincinnati on Saturday.
Borzello will serve his suspension, for “excessive arguing, using inappropriate language, and failing to leave the dugout,” Tuesday during the Cubs game at Pittsburgh, MLB announced Monday.
Borzello was the only member of the Cubs to receive additional discipline after two incidents, the second a benches-clearing argument, during the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Reds manager David Bell, outfielder Jesse Winker and first baseman Joey Votto all were fined, and Bell and Winker received one-game suspensions.

Tempers began to flare Saturday when Reds starting pitcher Tejay Antone threw a pitch over Anthony Rizzo’s head. Antone insisted after the game that it wasn’t intentional. Cubs manager David Ross felt otherwise.
The Cubs dugout voiced their displeasure, Borzello among them. He was ejected. After Ross came out of the dugout to argue with the umpires a second time – he said he went out to ask home plate umpire Nic Lentz why he was so focused on the Cubs dugout – Lentz ejected Ross as well.

Then, in the bottom half of the same inning, Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay threw a breaking ball head-high to Reds’ Shogo Akiyama. It was the Reds dugout’s turn to begin shouting. Rizzo said something back, and eventually Winker and Votto left the dugout. First base umpire Dan Bellino ejected Bell, Winker and Votto in rapid succession.
