The Cubs named Johnny Washington assistant hitting coach Monday, their third new addition to David Ross' staff this offseason.
Washington fills the opening left by Chris Valaika, whom Cleveland named its top hitting coach last month.
Teams are unable to make big-league signings and trades during MLB's lockout but are permitted to make managerial and coaching staff additions.
Washington, 37, spent 2021 as hitting coach with the KBO's Hanwha Eagles. He previous spent five seasons with the Padres organization (2016-20) — including three on San Diego's big-league staff under then-manager and current Cubs bench coach Andy Green.
Washington was the Padres' first base coach in 2017, assistant hitting coach in 2018 and hitting coach in 2019. He was San Diego's minor league hitting director in 2020.
