Popular Cubs reliever Pedro Strop has taken a leave of absence from the team for personal reasons.

He posted an Instagram story Sunday showing him at home in the Dominican Republic. It’s unclear when he might return.

Sources confirmed Strop’s leave, but the team had no official comment on his status.

Strop, who signed this spring as a minor-league free agent, pitched two scoreless appearances in relief for the Cubs, most recently April 16. He had been added as a replacement player from the alternate site after three relievers went on the COVID-19-related injured list that week.

He was traveling with the team on its taxi squad until then.

Strop, 35, returned to the alt site on April 17.

He is not shown on any current organizational roster.

The Triple-A Iowa season begins Tuesday, which could force the Cubs into a roster-related move with Strop, depending on how soon he expects to return.
