The Cubs rotation took another hit on Wednesday as lefty José Quintana landed on the 10-day injured list with left lat inflammation.
Quintana is the second Cubs starter to hit the IL this week, following Tyler Chatwood, who hit the shelf Tuesday with a right forearm strain. Quintana was expected to start in place of Chatwood during this weekend's five-game series with the Cardinals.
Quintana returned from the IL last Tuesday after missing the first month this season with a left thumb injury. He's made two relief appearances, allowing four earned runs in six innings, walking two while striking out nine.
Quintana replaced Chatwood after he exited Sunday's start with his injury, pitching three innings of two-hit, one-run ball, striking out six.
With Quintana and Chatwood sidelined, Adbert Alzolay is a candidate to join the rotation. The Cubs recalled right-handed reliever Jason Adam from their South Bend alternate site on Wednesday.
