The Cubs placed Steven Souza Jr. on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right hamstring strain.
Souza’s injury is the latest in a series of injuries to position players, ranging in severity. Also on Tuesday, Kris Bryant received a left wrist injection for an injury that had been ailing him for almost a week. He is expected to be out at least until Friday. Jason Heyward has been dealing with mid-back tightness, which kept him out of the Cubs' series finale against the Brewers Sunday and the first game of their double header against the Cardinals on Monday .
“The first day of spring training is the only day you feel 100 percent in this game,” Cubs infielder David Bote said. “And that goes for any player that’s ever played this game.”
Along with placing Souza on the IL, retroactive to Monday, the Cubs selected the contract of utility man Hernán Pérez from the South Bend alternate site. With his versatility, Pérez adds depth at multiple positions.
To make room for Pérez on the 40-man roster, the Cubs transferred left-handed pitcher Brad Wieck to the 45-day injured list with a left knee injury. Wieck was originally placed on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain, but on Saturday Cubs manager David Ross revealed that Wieck had experienced a setback.
