Ryan rejoins Cubs bullpen as Megill hits injured list

The Cubs on Friday placed reliever Trevor Megill on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain, recalling lefty Kyle Ryan from the South Bend alternate site in a corresponding move.

Ryan, who was already with the Cubs in Cincinnati as a member of their taxi squad, is available to pitch Friday.

The Cubs bullpen has undergone several changes this week, which included Megill joining the club Monday after Jason Adam's demotion to the alt-site.

Megill delivered a pair of scoreless appearances against Atlanta (Monday and Thursday) allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. The a 6-foot-8 right-hander has plus velocity, averaging 97 mph with his fastball between his two outings.

The Cubs recalled Ryan from the alt-site last Friday, when he threw two scoreless innings vs. Milwaukee, and sent him back down the next day. His season was delayed after he started spring training on the COVID-19 related injured list.

Ryan's return gives the Cubs four lefties in the bullpen, along with Andrew Chafin, Rex Brothers and rookie Justin Steele. The Cubs recalled Steele from South Bend on Thursday after designating Brandon Workman for assignment.
