Everyone knew the Cubs were barreling toward a trade deadline selloff when the team began to lose, but no one expected Anthony Rizzo to be the first of the core to be traded away.
But he was, when the Cubs traded Rizzo to the Yankees for a pair of prospects on Thursday.
The fans poured their hearts out for Rizzo on social with thank you messages and other tributes, some even waited to see him off at Wrigley Field.
Likewise, Cubs players flocked to social media to express their gratitude for Rizzo.
"My MF Brother 🤟🏾8/8/89-8/9/89.. The Business is the Business, but u brought the fun to the business and the grind.. You’re one of the best to ever do it, Trust your s**t.. You deserve yours," Jason Heyward wrote on Instagram.
"What you did for The Cubs and the city of Chicago it will be never FORGOTTEN, you made HISTORY ... Good Luck," catcher Willson Contreras wrote on Instagram.
"From the first day we met till today, I consider myself very lucky and privileged to have met this man. It was an honor to be his manager, teammate, and friend. The Yankees are getting a great one," former teammate and manager David Ross wrote.
Adbert Alzolay went with a simpler message, probably still processing what has just occurred.
Likewise, Ian Happ, Jake Marisnick and Robinson Chirinos were straight to the point.
