Among a series of roster moves on Thursday, the Cubs recalled right-hander Adbert Alzolay from their South Bend alternate site.

Right-hander Colin Rea was optioned to South Bend in a corresponding move.

This marks Alzolay's fourth stint with the Cubs this season, and he'll make his third start in Thursday's series finale against the Reds. In three appearances this season, he's allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in 8 2/3 innings.

Alzolay last appeared in this past Saturday's doubleheader with the Cardinals, allowing two runs in just 2 2/3 innings, walking five.

Other Cubs roster moves from Thursday:

-Steven Souza Jr., who was designated for assignment between doubleheader games on Saturday, cleared waivers and has been released.

-Matt Dermody, who was optioned to South Bend on Sunday and DFA on Monday, cleared waivers and has been assigned outright to South Bend.

-Right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland has joined the 60-man player pool and been assigned to South Bend. He last pitched in the big leagues in 2016, spending the last three seasons in the NPB and KBO.

-Right-hander Juan Gámez and outfielder Ryan LaMarre have been granted their release. Gámez signed a minor league deal last December and LaMarre in July. Both had been training at the South Bend site.

-The Cubs traded 19-year-old Class-A infielder Pedro Martinez to the Rays as a player to be named later from the José Martínez trade.

The player pool stands at 59.
