Cubs roster projection 10 games into MLB spring training 2021

The Cubs are 10 games into spring training. So, it’s time for a way-too-early roster projection. Cubs manager David Ross and president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer have a few tough questions to answer before setting their Opening Day roster. The Cubs will likely open the season with a four-man bench to give them an extra spot for a pitcher. But with depth in both the infield and outfield, how many of those spots will go to each position group? “I don't look at it quite that way,” Ross said on a Zoom conference Wednesday. “I'm looking at (who is) the best player off the bench to fill in, depending on where the depth is and holes and pinch-hit roles now that you have the pitcher batting again. There's going to be definite moments where you need a real bat on the bench, and maybe the position is not quite as important.” Of course, there’s also the battle at the back end of the rotation. Who will claim those last two starting spots and who will be relegated to a swingman role? The Cubs have a few more weeks to make those decisions, but we’re going to take a crack at it now.
