The Cubs added to their shorthanded pitching staff Thursday, agreeing to terms with free agent right-hander Kohl Stewart on a one-year, $700,000 major league contract.
Stewart, 26, was the Twins’ No. 4 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. He pitched in 17 games (six starts) for Minnesota in 2018 and 2019 before being outrighted. Stewart signed with the Orioles last year but opted out of the 2020 season, citing his higher risk of serious illness from the novel coronavirus due to type 1 diabetes.
Primarily relying on his fastball and slider, Stewart has a 4.79 career ERA. He’s considered a low-risk signing with potential for growth.
