Nance latest to go on IL as Cubs' COVID outbreak spreads

With two games left in the season, the Cubs continue to deal with a COVID-19 outbreak, details of which they're not allowed to disclose.

The Cubs placed reliever Tommy Nance on the injured list Saturday without specifying a reason, their fifth apparent COVID move in four days.

Nance is the fifth Cub since Wednesday to go on the injured list without an injury designation, following Patrick Wisdom (Wednesday), Austin Romine (Thursday) and David Bote and Nick Martini (Friday).

After Friday's moves, Cubs manager David Ross said the team's "radar is up," as they braced for more moves in the coming days.

"Just hoping that [Cubs trainer PJ Mainville] doesn't call my cell phone," Ross said Saturday of his mindset in recent days.

"You're holding your breath that it is just one. And we've got taxi guys here to cover."

The Cubs called up reliever Joe Biagini — who was already with them in St. Louis as part of their taxi squad — from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.

They did not have to make room for Biagini, signed to a minor-league deal last offseason, on the 40-man roster because Nance wasn't placed on the "10-day injured list."

Biagini is the sixth player called up from Iowa in the last four days.

"We're trying to get to tomorrow and through tomorrow and try to win the two games in between," Ross said, "and get into next year, and try to learn from where we can get better and try to deal with the circumstances that next year is going to present."
