Cubs' Miley expected to begin rehab assignment Thursday

Wade Miley is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Thursday, a positive development for the Cubs starting rotation.

Miley has not yet pitched this season after opening on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. He did not make an appearance in the abbreviated spring training after taking a cautious approach to his workload during MLB’s lockout.

Miley, who was scheduled to play catch before Tuesday’s series opener against the White Sox, has been building up, throwing around 50 pitches in a live batting session last week.

“I feel great,” he said. “I’m looking forward to facing opposing hitters.”

He said he wants to get to at least 3-to-4 innings before joining the Cubs.

“The up and downs is the most important thing,” he said. “It’s not the pitch count; it’s the sitting, getting up, sitting, getting up, sitting, getting up. I’m hoping 3-to-4, that would be great.”

The Cubs rotation has struggled through one month, ranking 27th in ERA and 25th in innings entering Tuesday, and has also been without Adbert Alzolay and Alec Mills due to injury.

Miley is looking forward to his eventual Cubs debut.

“I can’t wait,” he said. “I’ve been with the team this whole time and have just been itching to get out there and compete.

“But I think we did the right thing and I’m looking forward to it.”
