Cubs catcher Willson Contreras homered in his second at-bat and caught five innings Tuesday during the first game of a scheduled two-game minor-league rehab assignment for Triple-A Iowa against Indianapolis.

Contreras, who has been sidelined the last three weeks with a knee injury, also reached on an error in the first and scored the game’s first run Tuesday and threw out a runner trying to steal second in the third inning.

Contreras is expected to catch at least seven innings for the I-Cubs on Wednesday before being evaluated for a possible activation from the injured list Thursday, the day after rosters expand for the final month.

The Cubs open a four-game series at home against Pittsburgh on Thursday.
