Add Cubs catcher Willson Contreras to the list of Nico Hoerner fans rooting for the young infielder to stay in big-leagues.
“I think this guy needs to be in the lineup on a daily basis,” Contreras said Tuesday. “He’s a high-energy guy, he takes good at-bats, and he's always looking for ways to win the game. That’s Nico Hoerner.”
The Cubs recalled Hoerner from the South Bend alternate site last week, when they placed outfielder Joc Pederson (left wrist tendonitis) on the 10-day injured list.
Hoerner entered play Tuesday with six hits (four doubles) in 14 at-bats this season. He’s played at second base, shortstop and in the outfield since his call-up.
With Cubs shortstop Javier Báez (hamstring tightness) out Tuesday, for the second straight game, Hoerner again is scheduled to fill in for Báez in the field. Hoerner is also leading off for the second straight game.
“I'm really impressed with the way he got called up and the way he's been playing lately,” Contreras said. “And that's something that we should keep in mind when we make another (roster) move.”
Pederson becomes eligible to return from the IL this weekend, though the Cubs have not committed to a timetable for his reinstatement. Pederson is scheduled to start hitting again this week.
The Cubs will also have to factor in Báez’s health when deciding how to clear a roster spot for Pederson. Báez is scheduled for treatment and tests on Tuesday. If he bounces back, he could soon return to the lineup. If the Cubs training staff determines he’ll take several more days to recover, Báez could land on the IL.
