Darvish ‘sad' he couldn't win another start for Lester

Yu Darvish pitched well enough for the Cubs to win Game 2 of their Wild Card series against the Marlins, but the Cubs offense scuffled in a 2-0 loss.

Being eliminated from the postseason is never a good feeling, and for the Cubs, it meant Jon Lester didn't get to start Game 3, perhaps his last with the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

That alone was tough for Darvish, who described his emotions postgame.

“I’m very sad right now because my focus today was to have Lester pitch one more start at Wrigley," he said Friday. "That was my goal today and I couldn’t make that happen.

"I’m very disappointed.”

If that doesn't strike a chord in your heart...

Darvish did his part Friday (6 2/3 innings, five hits, two earned runs) and without his brilliant regular season, who knows where the Cubs would be.

Lester could become a free agent this winter, should the Cubs decline his $25 million option. But there's hope for a potential reunion, so perhaps we'll see him on the Wrigley mound in the blue pinstripes again.
