Joe Maddon's tenure with the Cubs is over.

Sunday, the Cubs officially announced that Maddon won't return as manager in 2020, ending an incredibly successful run on the North Side that began in 2015.

Former Cubs catcher and current front office assistant David Ross also joined the Cubs in 2015. Following Sunday's news, Ross shared a special shoutout to his former skipper on Twitter.

Ross has long-rumored been a possible successor to Maddon on the North Side. And while he recently said the "grass isn't always greener," in regards to the Cubs parting ways with Maddon, Ross also said that he has an itch to manage.

With Maddon officially not returning, Ross' name will certainly be in the mix as the Cubs look for their next on-field general.
