Giants' Buster Posey opts out of 2020 season after adopting premature twins

Giants All-Star catcher Buster Posey announced Friday he has opted out of the 2020 season.

Posey, a six-time All-Star and three-time World Series champ, and his wife adopted premature twin girls last week, which led to the decision.

Other stars across the league face similar decisions as Posey. Angels outfielder Mike Trout said last week he still doesn't feel comfortable playing because his wife Jessica is expecting their first baby in August. He hasn't decided if he will join the club on Opening Day.

Cubs star Kris Bryant said he absolutely considered opting out of this season after his wife gave birth in April. He's since committed to playing but this week said he doesn't feel safe amid the delays MLB has experienced in receiving COVID-19 test results.

“I wanted to play this year,” Bryant said, “because I felt that it would be safe and I would feel comfortable. But honestly, I don’t really feel that way, which is why I’m trying to keep my distance from everybody and wear my mask just so we can get this thing going.”

“I know I have a lot to worry about, and I still worry about going home and bringing it to my wife and my newborn. That’s scary to me.”

Under MLB's realigned divisions for 2020, the Cubs will not play the Giants this season.
