Interim Cubs manager Green ejected vs. Pirates

Even Andy Green wasn't quite sure who was managing the Cubs by the end of Friday's win over the Pirates.

"It's a great question, isn't it?" Green said, laughing. "I didn't stick around to find out. It looked like [Cubs pitching coach] Tommy [Hottovy] when he went on the field late.

"But at this point in time, your guess is as good as mine."

Green — the Cubs acting manager after David Ross tested positive for COVID-19 Friday — was ejected in the sixth inning.

Green was tossed after arguing with second base umpire Tom Hallion. He was contesting Sergio Alcántara was interfered with after the Cubs shortstop made a throwing error.

Pittsburgh's Kevin Newman slid into second base towards Alcántara as he attempted to finish a 4-6-3 double play. Alcántara's throw sailed into the Pirates dugout.

Green went out to ask Hallion for a slide rule check because the Cubs were out of challenges. They unsuccessfully challenged a play in the fifth, when Ian Happ was thrown out at home on a close play.

"We felt pretty confident about it and it didn't go our way," Green said of the Happ play.

Hallion ejected Green as he was walking back to the Cubs dugout. Green slammed his hat to the ground and went back to arguing with Hallion.

"Probably need to exhibit a little better self control after that," Green said. "But that conversation didn't go the direction I was hoping it would go and got a little heated."

Green anticipates talking about his memorable Cubs managerial debut with Ross, who will be in isolation for at least 10 days.

"I'm supposed to replace him as manager while he's not here and I get tossed after six innings," Green quipped. "I'm sure he'll have something to say about it. He'll probably appreciate the fire a little bit too."

Is there any chance Ross will pay Green's forthcoming fine?

"You know I'm going bring it to him that way," Green joked. "That text almost went out when I was walking [into the postgame press conference].

"It'll probably end up falling to me though, truth be told."
