Jim Callis: Chicago Cubs' pick Ed Howard was best shortstop in 2020 MLB draft

Another baseball prospect is applauding the Cubs’ first-round draft pick, Ed Howard. This time Jim Callis, senior writer at MLB Pipeline, is saying the Cubs got the best shortstop available.

“I like that pick a lot,” Callis said on SportsTalk Live on Friday. “In my mind, best shortstop in the draft… one of the best defensive players in this draft. Bat got a little bit of mixed reviews depending on when you saw him in the showcase circuit last summer, but I think he’s a little underrated as a hitter.”

Callis went a bit further and projected what Cubs fans can expect when Howard eventually makes it to Wrigley Field.

“I don’t think we’re going to see .300 with 30 homers at shortstop, but I don’t see why he couldn’t be a .270 and 15-20 homer guy, while giving you quality defense at shortstop. So I really like the value.”

According to maxpreps.com, Howard batted .396 with 6 homers and 59 RBI over two seasons at Mount Carmel.
