March Madness: Why David Ross is rooting for Loyola

MESA, Ariz. -- The Illinois-Loyola rivalry is heating up, even in the Cubs’ Zoom press conferences.

For March Madness, the Cubs picked team names out of a hat. Manager David Ross ended up with Loyola Chicago.

“Sahadev, why are you shaking your head?” Ross quipped Sunday morning, to The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma, an unabashed Illinois fan.

The TV in the Sloan Park press box showed the Ramblers up on the Fighting Illini. By halftime, Loyola had a 33-24 lead in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The winner of Sunday’s game is scheduled to play either Oklahoma State or Oregon State in the Sweet 16.
