The Cubs went in a different direction from the first round to the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
Sunday, they selected college starting pitcher Jordan Wicks from Kansas State 21st overall. Monday, in Round 2, they picked James Triantos, an 18-year-old prep infielder, 56th overall.
The Cubs added a diverse assortment of players with their nine selections Monday, selecting one catcher, two infielders, three outfielders and three pitchers.

Overall, they struck a nice balance with their 20 picks, taking 11 pitchers and nine position players. They also took 11 college players compared to nine preps prospects.
The drafted concluded Tuesday with rounds 11-20. Here is a roundup of the Cubs' final 10 selections.
Gage Ziehl, pitcher
Round 11 (334th overall), Penfield HS (New York)

Ziehl, 18, is the No. 470 overall prospect in the draft, per Baseball America. The right-hander stands 6-foot, 215 pounds.
According to Baseball America, Ziehl's fastball sits in the low 90s but can touch 95 mph, and his slider sits in the low 80s. He also has a changeup and curveball but is a fastball/slider pitcher at this stage in his career.
Ziehl is committed to University of Miami.
Teo Banks, outfielder
Round 12 (364th overall), Permian HS (Texas)
Update: Banks has opted to attend Tulane.
The Cubs went with back-to-back prep players to start Day 3, taking Banks, Baseball America's No. 434 overall prospect. The Tulane commit is a sturdy 6-foot-3, 190 pounds.
Banks, 18, bats and throws right-handed. He has a strong arm, clocking 93 mph off the mound, and above-average speed. He has plus-power potential, per Baseball America.
Banks was also a linebacker on his high school's football team.
Erian Rodriguez, pitcher
Round 13 (394th overall), Georgia Premier Academy (Georgia)
Rodriguez makes it three prep players in as many rounds Tuesday. He's committed to Northwest Florida State College (JUCO).
Rodriguez, 19, is older for his high school class. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-hander has a smooth delivery, wielding a fastball in the 92-95 mph range. He also has a slider and changeup in his repertoire.
Frankie Scalzo Jr., pitcher
Round 14 (424th overall), Grand Canyon
Scalzo, 21, is the first collegiate player the Cubs took on Day 3. A four-year player in college, he spent his freshman season at San Jose State before transferring to Grand Canyon University.
Scalzo worked almost exclusively in relief in college, including 11 scoreless innings (six appearances) in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
The GCU closer had another good season in 2021, allowing only seven earned runs in 29 2/3 innings (2.12 ERA).
A right-handed pitcher, Scalzo stands 6-foot-3, 185 pounds. He wields an upper-90s fastball.
B.J. Murray, third baseman
Round 15 (454th overall), Florida Atlantic
Murray, 21, spent three seasons at FAU and broke out in 2021. The third baseman hit .311/.424/.584 in 57 games, adding 14 home runs (fourth in Conference USA) and 52 RBIs.
A Bahamas native, Murray was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team in 2021. He throws right-handed and is a switch-hitter who had success from both sides of the plate in 2021.
Murray hit .308 lefty and .318 righty. Ten of his home runs came from the left side. He's 6-foot, 205 pounds.
Zachary Leigh, pitcher
Round 16 (484th overall), Texas State
Leigh, 23, played a fifth collegiate season in 2021, all with Texas State. He worked primarily as a reliever in his first three seasons (41 of 51 appearances out of the bullpen) before transitioning to the rotation.
The right-hander allowed five earned runs across four starts (1.88 ERA in 24 innings) in the shortened 2020 season. His numbers dipped in 2021; he turned in a 5.03 ERA in 15 starts, although that includes a complete game, three-hit shutout.
Leigh is 6-foot, 170 pounds.
Christian Olivo, shortstop
Round 17 (514th overall), Leadership Christian Academy (Puerto Rico)
Olivo is young for his class. The 17-year-old turns 18 this October.
Olivo is a reported athletic shortstop with good footwork and hands defensively. At 5-foot-11, 168 pounds, he has room to grow as he gets older. At the plate, he has a smooth, compact swing and is reported to hit the ball to all fields.
Olivo is committed to Seminole State College.
Dominic Hambley, pitcher
Round 18 (544th overall), Belmont Secondary School (British Columbia)
The Cubs took their third preps pitcher of the day and fourth overall in Hambley, who hails from Canada. The right-hander is built for his age, standing 6-foot-2, 230 pounds.
Hambley, 18, throws a mid-90s fastball that touches 95 mph, along with a curveball, changeup and slider.
Hambley is committed to Oregon State.
Daniel Avitia, pitcher
Round 19 (574th overall), Alhambra HS (Arizona)
Another round, another preps pitcher for the Cubs. Avitia is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander.
Avitia's fastball ranged in the low 90s in the state semifinals in May, along with a mid-70s slider and low-80s changeup. He beat the No. 1 seed that game, tossing seven innings of two-run ball, striking out 10, to lead his team to the title game.
Avitia is committed to Grand Canyon University.
Wilson Cunningham, pitcher
Round 20 (604th overall), JSerra Catholic HS (California)
The Cubs went full circle with their final pick, taking a lefty pitcher — as they did in the first round with Wicks.
Cunningham, 18, is big southpaw at 6-foot-8 (185 pounds). He throws a fastball, curveball and changeup.
Cunningham already has ties to the city. He's committed to University of Chicago.
