As Major League Baseball attempts to map out a 2020 season, one proposal involves stationing teams in three different states.
According to CBS Sports, MLB has recently discussed stationing teams in Arizona, Texas and Florida to start the season. Games would be played at MLB, minor league and spring training stadiums.
CBS’ report is the latest regarding what a 2020 season could look like, at least to start. Earlier this month, ESPN reported the league is “increasingly focused” on all 30 teams starting the season in Arizona.
The Players Union must agree to any proposal, and it’s unclear if the three-state plan would entail players quarantining away from their families. The safety of players and communities is paramount, first and foremost, hence why it could be necessary for team personnel to live in isolation.

However, multiple players have spoken out about the complexity of such a move and how they can’t see themselves and others leaving their loved ones for upwards of five months. If states get to a point where they can envision teams playing games in their home cities (albeit without fans), perhaps MLB only starts the season in Arizona/Texas/Florida.
As is the case with any potential plan, the three-state proposal is extremely contingent on the spread of the coronavirus. Any number of options could be on the table for the 2020 season, but none will be enacted if it’s unsafe to play ball.
