MLB Opening Day: Cubs release initial 30-man roster for 2020 season

Share

The Cubs released their Opening Day roster on Thursday ahead of Friday's first game against the Milwaukee Brewers

MLB clubs are allotted 30 active roster spots for the first two weeks of the season. That number drops to 28 in Weeks 3-4 and then 26 in Weeks 5-6. Each club will carry a three-man taxi squad on road trips to have players available if need arises. One of those players must be a catcher.

José Quintana will start the year on the 10-day injured list as he recovers from thumb surgery. Utility man Daniel Descalso was placed on the 45-day IL after spraining his left ankle in Wednesday's exhibition game.

The Cubs optioned pitchers Ryan Tepera and Jharel Cotton to their South Bend training site and assigned pitcher Colin Rea, who was optioned to Triple-A in March, to the South Bend roster. They also assigned four non-roster players to South Bend: utility man Hernán Pérez, outfielder Ian Miller, catcher P.J. Higgins and pitcher Danny Hultzen.

Infielder/outfielder Robel Garcia has been designated for assignment. Outfielder Mark Zagunis opted not to play this season and was placed on the restricted list. The 40-man roster stands at 40 and the 60-man player pool stands at 53.
