Opening Day 2021: Cubs roster projection with two weeks left
Since our last roster projection, there have been a couple new developments. Injury has complicated the picture at one position. A larger sample size has added clarity to others.
The Cubs made another round of spring training cuts Friday. They optioned pitcher Brailyn Marquez to Double-A and pitchers James Norwood, Kyle Ryan and Justin Steele to Triple-A. They sent pitcher Joe Biagini; outfielders Michael Hermosillo, Nick Martini and Ian Miller; and catcher Jose Lobaton to minor league camp.
The Cubs were expected to carry a four-man bench to open a spot for an extra pitcher. But in an interview with NBC Sports Chicago’s Gordon Wittenmyer, Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer left open the possibility of a different setup.
“We’ve talked a lot about 14 pitchers and 12 position players,” Hoyer said. “But that’s not set in stone either. We could end up with 13 and 13 as well.”
