Seven-inning doubleheaders and the extra-innings rule that places a runner on second base to begin each frame could make a return in 2021.
Major League Baseball has proposed bringing those rule changes back this season, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Friday.

The league adopted both rules last season for health and safety reasons in a compressed 60-game season. Though MLB is planning to start Spring Training on time this year, it remains concerned that the pandemic could continue to create scheduling challenges.

The MLB Players Association still will have to approve the rule changes for them to be adopted in 2021.
Whether the universal designated hitter and expanded playoffs will return is less certain. Though the universal DH is popular among both players and teams, the owners reportedly are using the rule as a bargaining chip while they push for an expanded postseason field.
