Scott Boras wants MLB season to resume now, but challenges abound

Scott Boras has never been shy about sharing his opinions on baseball.

So, when the super agent wrote an op-ed piece in the New York Times saying baseball should begin its spring training right now, fans took notice.

Boras’ plan would have players returning to team facilities right away under quarantine in an effort to begin the regular season as soon as possible.

But getting players across baseball to agree to be away from their families for an extended period may be difficult. Mike Trout has said he plans to be at the birth of his first child this summer, and if Trout leaves the Angels, he may need to be put into an extended quarantine upon his return.

Another issue is testing people involved with the teams. The struggles to test people across the nation has been well documented. It could be a bad look if completely healthy baseball players are being tested on a routine basis, while people with COVID-19 symptoms can’t get one.

The main point Boras makes is baseball can become a much-needed distraction for a country that has been without live sports for almost two months. Back in the 1940s, President Roosevelt asked baseball to play its season as World War II was underway as a way to give Americans something to look forward to after they got off work.

The time when we can sit back and enjoy a regular season Major League Baseball game will mark the end of a long road, one we are still navigating. Getting there safely is the biggest hurdle to overcome.
