Mark McGwire broke Roger Maris' single-season home run record on Sept. 8, 1998, drilling No. 62 against the Cubs at Busch Stadium.
Congratulations were in order for McGwire — Cubs infielders shook his hand as he rounded the bases and Sammy Sosa even came in from right field to embrace him in a bear hug.
Cubs hurler Steve Trachsel, who surrendered McGwire's record-breaking long ball, wasn't pleased at the time over how his teammates responded in that moment, however.
"I wasnt too happy with it. This is our opponent; we're trying to kick these guys' asses and move on," Trachsel said in ESPN's "Long Gone Summer" documentary. "Obviously it was great for baseball, it was great for fans — I get all that.
"But when it happened, I wasn't happy."
The Cubs lost that game 6-3 to drop into a tie for the NL wild-card spot. You can understand why Trachsel wanted his teammates to stay focused, even on a historic day for baseball (though one we now view differently due to McGwire's admission of using performance-enhancing drugs).
