Summer of Sammy: Sosa's 38th homer of 1998

Share

It's the 20th anniversary of the Summer of Sammy, when Sosa and Mark McGwire went toe-to-toe in one of the most exciting seasons in American sports history chasing after Roger Maris' home run record. All year, we're going to go homer-by-homer on Sosa's 66 longballs, with highlights and info about each. Enjoy.

Sosa's 38th homer of 1998 came with one out and one runner on base with the Cubs down 1-0, as Sammy mashed a two-run shot off of 1998 All-Star Rick Reed of the Mets.

Sosa would tally RBI No. 95 and 96 as Kerry Wood would allow only one run on  4 hits and 6 strikeouts in 7 innings of work for Kid-K.

Later, after Sosa was intentionally walked with a runner on 1st, left fielder Henry Rodriguez would single through the right field side to score third baseman Jose Hernandez to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead and eventual win over the Mets.
