Summer of Sammy: Sosa's 55th homer in 1998

It's the 20th anniversary of the Summer of Sammy, when Sosa and Mark McGwire went toe-to-toe in one of the most exciting seasons in American sports history chasing after Roger Maris' home run record. All year, we're going to go homer-by-homer on Sosa's 66 longballs, with highlights and info about each. Enjoy.

Sosa's hot week continued, as he took Reds pitcher Brett Tomko deep on the final day of August in 1998.

The Reds jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Cubs heading into the bottom of the third inning, but Sosa's 364-foot two-run shot started a comeback. The Cubs scored 5 unanswered runs and went on to pick up their 76th victory of the season.

Kerry Wood struck out 10 Reds in his 6 innings of work to pick up his 13th victory of the season. That ended up being Wood's final start in more than a year-and-a-half, next taking the mound May 2 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Fun fact: The win pushed the 1998 Cubs' record to 76-62. Meanwhile, the 2018 Cubs woke up Thursday morning with a 78-54 record, having played six fewer games at this point in the season than their '98 counterparts.
