Summer of Sammy: Sosa's 58th homer in 1998

Share

It's the 20th anniversary of the Summer of Sammy, when Sosa and Mark McGwire went toe-to-toe in one of the most exciting seasons in American sports history chasing after Roger Maris' home run record. All year, we're going to go homer-by-homer on Sosa's 66 longballs, with highlights and info about each. Enjoy.

Sosa made it three straight games with a homer to try to pull even with McGwire on Sept. 5, but the Cardinals slugger also went yard on the same day for his 60th dinger.

Sosa's 417-foot solo shot off Sean Lawrence in Pittsburgh helped the Cubs to an 8-4 victory. Sosa also singled and scored while the Cubs took advantage of three errors by Pirates shortstop Abraham Nunez.

Kevin Tapani notched his 17th win of the season with a 7.1-inning quality start.

Fun fact: Tapani also walked twice and scored a pair of runs in the game. You don't see that every day for the opposing pitcher.
