Summer of Sammy: Sosa's 60th homer in 1998

Share

It's the 20th anniversary of the Summer of Sammy, when Sosa and Mark McGwire went toe-to-toe in one of the most exciting seasons in American sports history chasing after Roger Maris' home run record. All year, we're going to go homer-by-homer on Sosa's 66 longballs, with highlights and info about each. Enjoy.

Sosa continued to make up ground on McGwire on Sept. 12, 1998, hammering a Valerio de los Santos pitch 430 feet.

With McGwire stuck on 62 homers for a week from Sept. 8-15, Sosa caught up while feasting on the Brewers in a three-game set at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs won this game thanks to six homers - one from Sosa and one each from Jose Hernandez, Gary Gaetti, Glenallen Hill, Tyler Houston and Orlando Merced.

Fun fact: Just like in present day, the Cubs and Brewers were squaring off for a late-season showdown and Sosa battered Milwaukee pitching in the series...although every hitter battered opposing pitching in the series.

Both teams scored double digits in all three of the games in that series 20 years ago, with Milwaukee winning Game 1 13-11 and the Cubs taking the final two games by scores of 15-12 and 11-10.
