Javier Báez is heating up.
The Cubs shortstop has been slumping at the plate in recent weeks but continued an upward stretch on Monday. Báez launched an opposite field blast in the fourth inning against the Tigers, no small feat with the deep alleys at Comerica Park.
Báez' blast went 425 feet and registered a 109.9 exit velocity. He got all of that one.
After going 0-for-3 in Game 2 of this past Wednesday's doubleheader with the Cardinals, Báez' average dipped to .189. But he went 3-for-10 over the weekend vs. the White Sox, smashing a double into the left field corner on Sunday.
At the time of Monday's homer, Báez is 5-for-13 dating back to the Friday. For a scuffling Cubs offense, El Mago's bat heating up would go a long way.
Update: Báez hit his second homer of the night in the eighth inning, a 401-foot blast to left field.
