Diaco wins Broyles Award, isn't going to Boston College

Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco was honored Tuesday with the Frank Broyles Award, given annually to the nation's top assistant coach. For now, he'll remain in that role despite speculation of the last few days he'd leave Notre Dame for a head coaching position.
Diaco was reportedly a finalist to fill Boston College's head coaching vacancy, but the school announced Tuesday afternoon the hiring of Temple's Steve Addazio to be their next head coach. The Diaco rumor mill won't completely go away, though, so long as there's speculation about his interest in the Wisconsin opening after Bret Bielema was lured away to Arkansas.
Losing Diaco could've meant Notre Dame would be without the head architect of its top-ranked defense for the BCS Championship against Alabama. Coach Brian Kelly said he wasn't surprised Diaco was drawing interest from Boston College, but chalked up potentially losing his defensive coordinator to the success of the program.
"Those are the kind of problems that I want to be able to deal with on a day-to-day basis, because that means that you're developing your program in a manner that is putting you in a position to compete for championships," Kelly said. "Those are all things real good programs have to deal with, and we'll deal with them appropriately in the same manner."
