The Chicago Fire will be on display in the bright lights of one of the world’s most famous stadiums.
Bastian Schweinsteiger is returning to Bayern Munich for a testimonial match and the Fire are coming with him. The Fire will play at Bayern’s Allianz Arena on Aug. 28.
Schweinsteiger will play one half for each team in what is being billed as his goodbye to Bayern fans.
“I’m really looking forward to walking back out at the Allianz Arena and hopefully meeting lots of fans who’ve been there since the start of my career,” Schweinsteiger said in a statement released by the Fire. “I’m especially looking forward to seeing the fans on the south terrace, as we’ve always had a great relationship.”
Schweinsteiger joined Bayern’s youth ranks at 13 and made his first team debut at 18. He made more than 300 appearances with the club and piled up the championships before leaving in 2015. The midfielder is among the most popular Bayern players in recent years and should receive a warm welcome in his return.
The match also fits decently well into the Fire’s schedule. There will be a quick turnaround after hosting Columbus on Aug. 25, but the Fire don’t play again until Sept. 16. Between having an off weekend following the Columbus match and an international window taking place in the first week of September, there will be plenty of time to return to Chicagoland.
At that time of year, Bayern will just be starting the 2018-19 season.
