Gerardo Concepcion is off to a really rough start

The Cubs made headlines in their reported interest in the top Cuban prospects -- Yoenis Cespedes, Jorge Soler, Gerardo Concepcion -- this winter, but they only wound up signing Concepcion...so far (Soler has not been signed as of yet).

That deal hasn't worked out yet. In two starts, Concepcion has lasted just 5.2 innings and has surrendered 12 runs on 13 hits, two walks and a hit batter. That makes for a 19.06 ERA and 2.65 WHIP.

Monday was especially rough for the 20-year-old. He wasn't even able to make it out of the first inning, getting just two outs and allowing seven runs.

The worst part is Concepcion actually retired the leadoff batter on a ground out and had two outs and a runner on third with only one run in at one point. Then the levees broke and the water came flooding in.

An RBI single followed by a homer, another single, an error, a balk, a hit batter, a walk and Concepcion's night was done.

Willengton Cruz relieved Concepcion and promptly gave up a bases-loaded triple.

Ouch.

It's just two starts, so it's hardly anything to get worked up about. But nobody wants to kick off their professional career that way.
