If hes not needed in todays game against the Cardinals, Justin Germano will most likely start Monday against the Pirates at Wrigley Field, Cubs manager Dale Sveum said.

Germano is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three relief innings with the Cubs, who acquired him from the Red Sox for cash considerations on July 19. He threw 5 23 scoreless innings with the Red Sox this season before they designated him for assignment on July 13. He was 9-4 with
a 2.40 ERA with Triple-A Pawtucket this season.

Germano, a 29-year-old right-hander, owns an 8-21 record and a 4.88 ERA over seven Major League seasons with the Padres, Reds, Indians and Red Sox. He last started a game in the majors in 2010 with the Indians.

Sveum said the Cubs expect Germano to throw about 80-90 pitches Monday.

He has great arm speed on all his off-speed pitches and changes speeds on his slow curveball, Sveum said. He sinks the ball, keeps the ball down, just kind of crafty. He has command of four pitches.
