How Manti Te'o helped Everett Golson in Oklahoma

Manti Te'o said after Notre Dame's 30-13 win over Oklahoma that he wasn't surprised with how well Everett Golson played. It just so happens Te'o may have played a part in Golson's success.

"In the locker room, Manti came up to me and he says, hey, can I talk to 5," coach Brian Kelly said, referring to Golson. "I said sure. So I pulled Everett aside, and I said Manti wants to talk to you. He sat him down and said a couple things. I didn't ask him what he said because it's really not important for me what Manti is talking about with the quarterback because I know what he's going to say is all positive.

"But Everett got up with a big smile on his face, and you know, I think it set him at ease. There were some things that he wanted to say."

Facing a record crowd at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Golson completed 13 of 25 passes for 177 yards and rushed 11 times for 64 yards and a touchdown. More importantly, though, he didn't turn the ball over.

While Kelly mentioned Golson exhibited plenty of other positives outside the box score -- specifically, he pointed to Golson picking up a blitz, coordinating with his offensive line and avoiding a false start -- there still is plenty of room for growth.

"The passing game still needs to improve," Kelly said. "We had what we consider four, maybe five opportunities that we left out there in terms of throwing the ball. So we want to see a higher passing efficiency in that respect.

"... What we need now is to put together a string of games back to back. I think those are the two things that we're going to ask from Everett in terms of his progress."
