First Gonzaga assistant coach Ray Giacolleti pulled out, then Purdue assistant Paul Lusk did the same.

Now, Michigan State assistant coach Mark Montgomery will meet with Northern Illinois officials on Wednesday. No offer has been extended but he comes highly recommended from Tom Izzo and is considered one of the better assistants in the country.

Giacoletti was long considered the favorite for the opening in DeKalb but apparently was unable to come to an agreement with the school. Lusk played at both Iowa and Southern Illinois and has been an assistant to Matt Painter for the past seven seasons, the last three as associate head coach.

Where the Huskies turn next is up in the air but they still have solid candidates among their finalists in South Dakota State head coach Scott Nagy, Indiana assistant Tim Buckley, Wisconsin associate head coach Greg Gard, and Michigan State associate head coach Mark Montgomery.
