Northern Illinois off to best start since 1990, aim for NCAA Tournament

With a 15-3 record, the Northern Illinois Huskies are off to their best start since 1990.

The Huskies are currently undefeated on their home floor this season, an example of how their hard work and determination is paying off.

"We just talked about getting better," said head coach Mark Montgomery. "We had five returning guys and eight newcomers. Let's just try to get better, take it one day at a time and then see what happens. And we got off to a great start. I think that's helped."

The ultimate goal for the Huskies is to get back to the NCAA Tournament, a place they haven't been for exactly 20 years. In order to do that, they know they'll have to win the MAC Tournament, which helps them keep grinding every day in practice.

"Making history would be something we would all love to do," said guard Michael Orris, whose 2.3 assist/turnover ratio ranks third best in the MAC. "I've been to the NCAA Tournament before when I was with Kansas State and it's like nothing ever. You dream about it as a kid.
