NHL tables rest of opening CBA offer

Donald Fehr and the NHLPA have quite a bit to sort through, but things are moving along.

After NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and owners met on Wednesday, the league tabled the remaining elements of the opening contract offer to the players. Bettman says the NHL walked the players through the "nuts and bolts" of the proposals as negotiations continue.

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr has shared that the proposal they've received from the league covers topics such as training camps, injuries, roster moves and medical care, in addition to financial changes that would directly affect each player. Changes proposed about the salary cap remain the biggest issue, as owners are pushing for limits that put a 22 percent salary rollback.

"On a lot of things, I don't think there will be a big difference in opinion," Fehr said. "On some other things we have to analyze what the actual affect of moving from A to B would mean for the individual players, our staff and agents that would be working on those matters.

"I don't think that's a terribly long process but it's not a five-minute turnaround either."

The NHLPA has yet to counteroffer the NHL's July 13 proposal, but Fehr says that should be coming within the next week or two. Both sides will come together on Thursday afternoon before meeting again next week in New York.

At the end of Wednesday's meetings, Fehr added, "Our goal is to move this process along as quickly as possible."
