Brian Kelly, as of Monday afternoon, hasn’t met with his offensive coaching staff or quarterbacks, so he declined to make a public decision on whether or not DeShone Kizer will be Notre Dame’s No. 1 quarterback moving forward.
Kizer took every snap after the Irish offense went three-and-out with Zaire at quarterback on its first drive of the second half in Sunday's 50-47 loss to Texas. Kizer completed 15 of 24 passes for 215 yards with five touchdowns and rushed 13 times for 77 yards with a score. Zaire completed two of five passes for 23 yards and rushed three times for no yards.
“I haven’t got a chance — everything we do, we do within our group first,” Kelly said. “I haven’t got a chance to speak with our group, and I mean our group being the offensive staff and the two quarterbacks.
"Once I get a chance to spend some time with them — we’re really in the process of grading film and evaluating all three phrases of our game. Once we do that and get a chance to sit as a staff and talk about it, we’ll have a better sense.”
Kelly said in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s game that he wasn’t sure if Notre Dame would ditch its dual-quarterback offense and roll with Kizer. But after film evaluation and meetings this week, expect a resolution on the matter relatively quickly.
“DeShone played a lot more than Malik, so we’ll have to go back and watch the film and evaluate it as such,” Kelly said Sunday night. “There were a lot of plays out there I think DeShone would like to have back, too. We just have to sit back and find out whether it’s a one-quarterback situation or a two.”
